Interview with Grotesque Hysterectomy 2005

By Bradley Smith

don’t normally do this but since there is so little known regarding your band can you please give us a little history and flesh out some details regarding Grotesque Hysterectomy for us?

Grotesque Hysterectomy was started by me and my brother Christopher back in 2003.Since then we have had a lot changes in the band concerning band members. In 2004 we released our demo called "Savage Decapitation" witch received very good feedback.  This record is much more raw and dirty as far as sound goes.  The music was also more trash and grind on that record.  We now finally have a steady line-up and are releasing our 7 inch this fall the record is called "Piercing through" and has three tracks of pure death metal or as we like to call it NORTHERN AUDIO VIOLENCE!!!

The death metal style that you guys play is much more reminiscent of the Floridian style as opposed to more melodic Scandinavian style.  What were some of your influences composing your music?

Our influences is mainly death metal bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and Morbid angel, but at the same time we try very hard to create our own sound and attitude to the music.  We work very long with each song to make sure it’s the best we can possible manage in both playing technics and brutality.

As a Norwegian death metal band it must be hard to get recognized when your country is much more famous for its black metal exploits.  Do you think it may actually help you stand out more?

There is a lot of good death metal bands in Norway right now such as Blood Red Throne, Chton and Diskord.  We naturally hope to sell many records one day to but that would be because our music is good, not because we burned some churches or some shit.  Hahaha....  Death metal should be about the music and not about image, who has the baddest panda makeup, or who served the most jail time.

Your 7” has some really interesting and mildly disturbing cover art.  Where did you get it and how do you feel it represents the music contained within.  To me it is a perfect visualization of the music.

Our cover designer Christine came up with it for about six months ago.  I don’t know where she got it.  Maybe she made it of some people she didn’t like.... hahah.  I think it represents the music to the bone! Extreme music should have extreme artwork and packing. The gate fold cover also comes with an official Grotesque Hysterectomy Puke Bag (TM)

You have released “Piercing Through” on your own label, Anthology Records.  Do you intend to keep using this method or have you garnered any bigger label attention?  Will you release any other band’s material on Anthology?

We will release our planned full-length album on Anthology for sure but we maybe have to licence it to some bigger label or distro to sell as many records as we like.  The release and promotional work is half the pleasure for me but i don’t do it because I think I will maybe earn big money on it.  We will do what is right for the band if the pressure is to much and we can’t focus on the music as much as we like. Then maybe we could sign to another label but that not the situation at all now.  And I don’t think it will be for long time hahaha...

About signing other bands: We are looking for a band that we think as something new to offer but we haven’t found that band yet...

I didn’t get any lyrics with the promo and was wondering what topics you guys covered.  I mean from the name of the band certain inferences can be made but I think that would be assuming too much.  Heh heh.

If you take the title Fertilized in Autopsy you’ll get an idea what the song is about.

About the band name Grotesque Hysterectomy we get much feedback.  People think it is the most extreme band name ever.  If you search Hysterectomy on Google you will now hahaha

You have stated that you have a full length album projected for a fall 2006 release.  Will this be on Anthology records and what sort of progression can we expect from you guys musically?

The album is planned to be out about this time in 2006.The album will also be an Anthology release this time on CD.  The music will be more brutal and tight than before.  This time we will also be using a pro studio for the first time and we hope to work a bit more to create the sound that we are seeking

What else are you guys planning for the future?  Any tours or other musical projects?

We are planning to play a lot live.  After the new year maybe we will end up doing a tour.  But this takes much planning and money.  We will also need to travel with a bigger band than us so... time will show....Concerning other bands, I have a band called The Goosebumps.  We have released one album and are currently working on a trilogy called "Camp fire Classics" the music is Western Doom.
